Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) Application Instructions

Please note: These instructions may vary depending on your iron, the type of vinyl, and the material you are applying it to.

1. Set up your iron

Ensure your iron is set to its maximum temperature (typically around 150°C, similar to a heat press). Make sure the steam function is turned off.

2. Prepare your surface

Lay your item on a firm, heat-safe surface such as a sturdy table or countertop. Avoid using an ironing board, as it tends to have too much give, which reduces the pressure applied.

3. Protect your surface

Place a folded towel or similar material underneath the item to prevent heat from transferring onto your work surface.

4. Position the vinyl

Peel the vinyl away from its backing plastic. Position it on your item where you would like the design to sit. Cover the vinyl completely with baking paper or a tea towel (we recommend baking paper, as it provides more even heat coverage).

5. Apply heat and pressure

Iron over the vinyl area, keeping the iron moving continuously for about 30 seconds. Apply firm pressure as you do so.

6. Cool and peel

Allow the vinyl to cool for a couple of minutes until it is cool to the touch. Slowly peel away the protective plastic, ensuring the vinyl adheres properly.

If any part of the vinyl has not stuck, repeat step 5 as needed. Once all the plastic has been removed, place the baking paper or tea towel over the design again and give it a final press (this doesn’t need to be for a full 30 seconds—just enough to secure the design).

Additional notes:

If using a tea towel instead of baking paper, you may need to apply heat for a little longer, as tea towels are thicker.

Vinyl Application Instructions

1. Prepare the layout

Roughly cut out the wording and position it on your mirror or acrylic surface as desired. Adjust the placement until you are happy with how it looks.

2. Prepare the surface

Ensure the surface you are applying the vinyl to is clean and free from any slippery residue. I recommend gently wiping it with a soft tissue or cloth—be careful not to apply too much pressure, especially on mirrors, as they can vary in sensitivity.

3. Apply pressure to the vinyl

Using a card (such as a loyalty card), firmly rub over the backing tape and vinyl—but not directly on the mirror or acrylic. This helps the vinyl adhere to the transfer tape.

If the vinyl does not lift from the backing paper when peeling, gently warm it with a hairdryer on a low heat setting from a distance, or leave it near a radiator for a short time. Then try lifting the vinyl again.

4. Apply the vinyl to the surface

Once ready, place the vinyl (with backing tape) onto the surface where you want the wording to appear.

5. Secure the vinyl

Rub over the vinyl gently with your finger or card, applying light pressure to help it stick.

6. Remove the backing tape

Slowly peel away the backing tape, keeping it as flat as possible so it slides over itself. This will encourage the vinyl to adhere to the surface rather than lift with the tape. Take your time to ensure all parts of the vinyl transfer cleanly.
